I was horrified to read a recent report from BBC One’s Watchdog programme that faecal bacteria had been found in ice served in drinks by three of the UK’s leading coffee chains.

Costa, Starbucks and Café Nero were all found to have contaminated iced drinks. Seven out of ten samples of ice from Costa were found to be infected while three in ten were for both Starbucks and Café Nero.

Since the findings were announced Costa has said they have new equipment for ice storage and updated their ice-handling guidelines. Both Starbucks and Café Nero have said they have carried thorough internal investigations.

Treating ice as a food stuff is something I have been talking about for some time. You can read my thoughts on the matter here.
